If you enjoy cycling, then this one is an easy choice (cycling and adventure together).
Where am I now?
Actually, I am back in South Korea teaching ESL for earning a living. The expeditions in western China (2011) and Mongolia (2012) were great lessons in adventure travel, breaking down boundaries of culture, nation, language.
Mongolia by far was the toughest on a mountain bike, if I return to the Steppe grasslands, deserts and mountains - I'll bring some friends with me. Everything is better sometimes when it's terribly difficult together, then overcome. If interested in cooking up ideas, PM me.
This group was started by one member, to share, hopefully to inspire someone.
In the near future, I will share more of the candid scenes in expedition travel, so many stories are left untold, challenges, logistics, family, work...how to do all this.
There is a book culminating now, all about Mongolia bike travel, I think this will be a practical guide with all ingredients needed to cross the country in 45 days.
Personal notes,
Overcoming and completing expeditions is really good. Think of a plan, share it with your closest friends (or the world) and go to it. Dreams happen when you learn to kick some a** and look up at all the possibilities the moment you failed for the 10000000th time. Never give up, stick with your plan, be flexible when systems fail you, and protect yourself and your family while out exploring the world. Family first, exploring second.
I will start posting more details about the past two expeditions, the changes that happened working as an explorer/father, and the good/bad sides of adventure touring solo, it's not just the destination or the journey, all the preparation and commitments, and launch - and then...there is the survival period between A-B.
Life is full of lessons, some punishments, some victories and loads of hard work, but the rewards outweigh the sacrifices and the cultures of this world, the amazing geography of the land itself with or without people present (wilderness grasslands, deserts and sections of the Himalayas so far experienced) are all too good to miss out on. When you start exploring, you wake up and start really feeling that this world is alive, our lives are limited/no refunds, 1-ticket only, so make the most of it.
(:
Be well, live YOUR DREAM, and INSPIRE OTHERS when you overcome and build foundations for the future. My family came first, my work came second, but exploring came from all of the hard work in between. I share other updates here.
